about

Globus Hystericus and Inertia Variations (petemurphy.bandcamp.com/album/inertia-variations) are sister EP’s that juxtapose the exuberant, joyful innocence of childhood Christmas times with the chaotic, unsettling ennui of adulthood.

As a child, my parents used to record me opening my Christmas presents on a small Grundig tape recorder. My dad recently found a few of the tapes and I transferred them into my computer. These oxide captured memories formed the basis for both EP’s.
That old Grundig, while probably long ago discarded in local landfill, has remained a totem of my early years. I used to ask my dad to record theme tunes from TV shows by holding the recorder up to the speaker on the TV.

We’re currently isolated due to the Corona Virus pandemic, and I had the idea of making these EP’s as a conversation between 7 year old me and 44 year old me. It didn’t quite turn out that way, but there are recent field recordings included that bridge the 37 year gap.

The age of 7 was an important, formative year for me. I received my first guitar, and dad taught me my first few chords. I had a fancy-dress party for my birthday, where I dressed as a punk, and an image from that day, likely taken with my dad’s Chinon SLR, was used for the cover of my Thelonious Punk album. Every time I think back to my childhood, most of my memories are focused around being seven. 1982 – 1983.
Charles and Di taking their vows after only 13 dates (day off school! Yes!).
Dad introducing me to the early Beatles albums and Queen’s ‘Bicycle Race’.
Adam Ant. George Michael. Prince. Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. Who knew the tragic fates that would await those artists. Only one of them is still living, and he has suffered with mental health issues for many years.
My first experience of loss, when my best friend Benedict moved to Wales.
Many more memories, some presumed long forgotten, flit in and out of my mind at random times and catch me off guard.

While both EP’s use snippets and samples from ‘The Christmas Tapes’, Globus Hystericus is centred around feelings of chaos and hopelessness, whereas Inertia Variations is built on a sense of ‘calm, unsettling agitation’.

There is no ‘easy listening’ here. No pop music, no melody. Is there hope? I have no idea…
